Argument: Duck Season Should be Extended

Assertion/Claim = Main Idea

  • There are more ducks in Arkansas than there has been in years, therefore duck season should be extended.
Evidence- Concrete Detail:

  • Observers with the Annual Breeding Population & Habitat Survey counted an estimated 45.6 million birds on the breeding grounds; that is an 11% increase over last year & is a 35% above the long-term average.
  • Commentary 1: This year is the States 14th consecutive 60-day season with a 6-duck bag limit .                                Why won't they extend it to a 70-day season?
  • Commentary 2: The ducks are here and still coming, just 10 more days would be nice.

  • This year is the highest count since the Annual Survey began in 1955. The Mallard Fall Flight Index of an estimated 11.1 million birds is similar to last year's number.
  • Commentary1: Just because we have all these birds does in no way mean that we will have good hunting in the first two parts of the season due to the fact of warmer weather.
  • Commentary2: Why should we hunt when it is so warm we will sweat and we know we aren't going to kill a bird.

  • Opposing Claims/They Say: The duck population is growing, we should let the population continue to rise and save the ducks for out later generations.
  • My Rebuttal/I Say: The ducks are not going extinct, the long-term average has grown 35 percent.

    "My Antonia"

Willa Cather in her novel My Antonia, offers her view of life during the pioneer time.                                       My Antonia, would be way different if it was told from Antonia's point of view, it would more than likely have allot to do with farming, seeing as how all she knows in America is farming, she had to just to survive.
If I did not know the author of My Antonia, was a women I would have thought a man wrote it, so yes Cather did an amazing job telling the story as a man.
I think Jim changed the title from Antonia to My Antonia, because they were such good friends he felt as if she was his.

    The Effects of Setting

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie. The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together. The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

The Setting of the novel effects everyone in it, if it were to take place somewhere else, it might not effect the characters the same way. For example if it were to take place in Antonia's home country it might not effect her as much as it would Jim or his Grandparents..

The setting around me makes me look back on my younger years and regret being such a brat when my Grandfather was alive, it makes me wish I would have been more loving and caring, I miss him so much and wish he was here to watch me shoot trap, kill deer/ducks, and be at my wedding. All the Christmas lights and Christmas trees are like a giant arrow pointing to the sky, telling me that he is watching over me and is with me no matter where I'm at..
